Triumphing Over Multiple Limitations
When I first arrived at WorkBC Centre Guildford in January 2024, I was unemployed and had been out of work for about a year. This period of unemployment was due to the multiple barriers I faced while recovering from substance use disorder.
Finding work was challenging for several reasons. I lacked recent work experience, had transportation limitations, struggled with basic computer skills, and didn’t have the necessary work clothing or supplies.
To overcome these obstacles, I needed both financial support for essential work clothing and supplies and general assistance with job searching and training.
My case manager was incredibly helpful. They provided me with a basic computer skills course and a wage subsidy marketing letter. Most importantly, WorkBC supplied me with the essential work clothing and tools needed for my job. This support was particularly valuable because welding supplies can be quite costly.
Thanks to this support, I am now employed full-time as a welder.
Overall, my experience with WorkBC Centre Guildford was great and I would definitely reconnect in future if I needed to.
