Rebuilding the Foundation for My Future in Canada

Rebuild. Future under construction.

Hello, my name is Sy. I am a 28-year-old single male from Eritrea, a government-assisted refugee in Canada. Before arriving here, I spent six challenging years in Libya working various construction and cleaning jobs while seeking stable employment. Although I know basic Arabic, my primary language is Tigrinya, and my English was assessed at LINC 1. Despite these challenges, my life took a positive turn thanks to the incredible support I received from WorkBC.

When I opened my file with WorkBC, I struggled with communication and finding employment. This is where my employment counselor made a significant difference. She helped me craft a professional resume and connected me with several construction employers. Through her efforts, I secured a job as a construction worker.

My employment counselor’s support went beyond just resume building. She conducted mock interviews with me, which greatly improved my confidence and interview skills. Additionally, one of the job coaches at WorkBC, provided essential support for my job start, including necessary construction clothing and commuting assistance.

I am now happily employed in a construction company, enjoying a positive work environment. This job has not only provided me with financial stability but also an opportunity to improve my English and communication skills.

I am deeply grateful to WorkBC for helping me overcome my barriers and find a job that is setting the foundation for my future in Canada. Thank you, WorkBC, for your unwavering support and dedication to my success.
