Hello, my name is Miguel. I had been looking for work since February 21, 2020, due to a layoff.

I was out in the job market after a long time and didn’t anticipate it was going to be so difficult. After completing my undergraduate degree back in 2014, I had some challenges finding work in the tough job market right after university. I was job hunting for about one year before I decided to go back to school to enroll in a short Diploma Program in International Trade & Freight Forwarding in 2016. This ultimately led to a work placement with my first employer at Sunshine Logistics which actually got converted into a permanent offer later on.

It changed in February this year when I was laid off due to business restructuring at this organization. I started looking for employment opportunities and then the pandemic hit. I was unemployed for about a month before going to Guildford WorkBC in March 2020.

As part of being on Employment Insurance, I was approached to attend an Information Session at one of the many WorkBC Centres. I attended the one in Guildford close to home. It didn’t cost me anything to join, so I figured I had nothing to lose and it was the best decision I made in my job search. I wish I knew of them earlier when I first got out of university.

I was sent weekly job leads, invited to virtual job fairs, offered a 1-1 resume review by one of their many facilitators. Laura was one of the many great facilitators that reviewed and revamped my resume in order for me to be competitive in the job market and land more interviews.

I received weekly and monthly check-ins on my job applications. Sonia was really helpful and approachable and reached out to employers on my behalf to follow up on the applications I submitted. She also informed me that I was qualified for the New Hire Employer Grant which gave me a significant advantage compared to other candidates who weren’t using the services of WorkBC. I am so grateful for the help and support of the Guildford WorkBC team and I highly recommend them to anyone who needs a support team to guide them through the competitive job market!

I recently received a job offer on December 1, 2020, and found new employment. I currently work for a reputable organization as an Operations Specialist.

Thanks, Guildford WorkBC!
