Breaking Barriers: An Inspiring Journey to Employment - Anonymous

I was unemployed for about a year when my friends said that WorkBC could help me get a job, so I figured it could work since I hadn’t had much luck on my own.

I really needed 1-1 support because I faced many challenges in my job search. I had weak computer skills and struggled with applying online for jobs. I also struggled with in-person interviews and marketing myself to employers. But mainly, to find an occupation that would allow me to work because I have physical and intellectual disability, low education and no work experience, which often disqualified me. Besides, employers don’t understand how to really support people with disabilities and are not often flexible enough for what we need.

My job coach referred me to get a functional capacity assessment done, so all of us could understand my physical strengths/limitations better. They also provided me with training, such as customer service/cashier training as well as basic computer training.  WorkBC helped connect me to volunteer work, so I could gain some retail/customer service skills and update my resume. My case manager also applied for jobs with me and referred me to the VOICE program at Douglas College, they collaborated with my case manager to job develop and find me employment.

WorkBC was terrific! Today I have a part-time job at a Canadian retailer.

I hope other people like me can get employed from using these services/programs.
